Black Lek Stays

Due to the success and popularity of the Black Grouse Lek experiences, 2024 dates are now available.

  • Stay the evening of Thursday 18th April with the lek the morning of Friday 19th April
  • Stay the evening of Monday 22nd April with he lek the morning of Tuesday 23rd April

Come and enjoy the rare sight of the Black Grouse Lek, a traditional a mating ritual where two male birds ‘dance’ before dawn to get the attention of a potential mate. The Lek has become an increasingly rare spectacle.

However, here in Upper Teesdale, we’re proud to offer a time-limited glimpse of Black Grouse flashing their tail feathers and fluttering their wings in what appears to be an intricately choreographed set of moves. If you’re a wildlife lover or nature documentary enthusiast, this is an extravagant display – one certainly not to be missed.

To make your experience even more special, we’re offering an exclusive package: a night’s stay at idyllic rural retreat High Force Hotel, followed by an early start with Raby Estates’ Head Gamekeeper. Once you’ve watched the birds’ fascinating performance, you’ll then head back to High Force Hotel to enjoy open fires, tweedy armchairs and a sumptuous, locally sourced breakfast.

Your Evening

Enjoy an evening stay at our High Force Hotel, a cosy Victorian inn nestled in the heart of the North Pennines. Our new Spring menu is ready to supply you with a hearty meal before your early night stay, we look forward to getting you settled before the big event.

Your Morning

Set off in the early hours of morning with our Raby Estate Head Gamekeeper to watch this spectacular sight, before returning to the hotel for a fulfilling Teesdale breakfast.
