A right rumpus is about to hit the North East this autumn as Raby Castle, Park and Gardens launches a never seen before spectacle of live music, dance and captivating puppetry, which all comes alive after dark.

The Glittering North will take over the grounds of Raby Castle, Park and Gardens to provide an immersive and unforgettable new experience this autumn with selected dates throughout October and into early November.

Celebrating the region’s Norse and Viking heritage in a raucous adventure like no other, the event brings to life iconic figures from the past with enchanting puppetry and illuminating light art.

Embrace this captivating new event with hands warming around a mug of hot chocolate, late-night shopping, and fiery clusters of red and orange as the trees change colour and crunchy leaves beneath your feet. An evening full of feasting, torchlight and fire processions, designed to set imaginations alight in a spectacle never seen before in County Durham.

The Glittering Trail

This free-flow interactive experience allows groups of friends and families to take it at their own pace. The evening begins at ‘ Glittering Trail’ in the Walled Gardens when you step into a whole new world. From fire foxes in the Northern Lights to Sleipnir a giant illuminated puppet horse with eight legs to an immersive watery world by the garden ponds of illuminated immense fish surrounded by a ring of light.

You will find a maze of sweeping valkyries Gullinburstin, a boar with bristles made from gold that light up the sky, to the amphitheatre lawn lit up bright with Odin’s runes and Sif’s golden headpiece – visitors of all ages can mingle with these fascinating figures before settling down for tales of folklore and myth in The Riding School.

The Gathering

The Riding School will be transformed into this mythical new world, surrounded by warm lights, flags, bunting and barrels allowing you to hunker down in the thrill tales of Norse gods and shapeshifting beasts.

Tickets to step into The Glittering North at Raby Castle, Park and Gardens can now be booked for the following dates: 12th, 13th, 19th, 20th, 26th, 27th, 30th, 31st October and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd November with timeslots available from 4pm – 8pm.

Tickets cost £20 for adults, £13 for children, £66 for families (2 adults + 3 children) and under 3’s are free.

Delicious Food & Late Night Shopping

There is so much in store for you with a special menu of warm food and drinks and plenty of late-night shopping!

Extend your autumnal evening and embrace the sunset views of Raby Castle from the new Vinery café restaurant. The glasshouse will be open throughout the evening to provide a special menu of delicious food with warm macaroni cheese and Long Horn Beef Stew to amaretto hot chocolates and mulled wine.

The Garage close to The Coach House will be open serving delicious sweet treats, tasty crepes, a selection of warm drinks and an array of special hot chocolates.

How long does the event last?

The Glittering North runs each evening between 4pm – 9pm. This is a free-flow event so you can enjoy as much time as you please, the estimated dwell time is 90 minutes.

Can I bring a dog?

We would advise against bringing dogs as this will be a busy, noisy event with music, live performances and high volumes of people.

Is The Glittering North accessible?

There are accessible routes to view all areas and our staff will be happy to advise you. Please note The Glittering North is an evening event with reduced lighting in many areas. If you would like to discuss accessibility further, please contact us in advance.

Is there a carer ticket?

As this is a special event all tickets are chargeable.

Can I bring a pram?

There are accessible routes to be able to bring a pram. We encourage the use of a sling or carrier for small infants rather than the use of pushchairs.

Is there somewhere for food and drinks?

Yes, there is plenty of free parking. Please note the overflow parking is on grass terrain.

The Glittering North will appeal to all ages, it is the perfect evening for families and friends.

Will the Coach House Shop be open?

Yes! You’ll find a curated selection of homeware and gifts displayed on reclaimed furniture from across the estate. Our philosophy at Raby is local wherever possible, and here in the Coach House you’ll discover the kind of high-quality, artisan items you can’t shop anywhere else.
