1776\u2019s Encounter with High Force\u2019s Wild Beauty<\/h2>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t

<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t

Access to High Force was difficult before 1830, but a handful of determined travellers, artists, and geologists made the trek and recorded their impressions.<\/p>\n

In a 1776 travel guide, William Hutchinson described stumbling on an idyllic gathering:<\/p>\n

\u201cBeneath us on the rocks, a party on pleasure, consisting of several gentlemen and ladies, sat enjoying the beauties of the scene [\u2026]. The rocks were spread with their repast, and the servant attending catched the living spring to mix their wine.\u201d<\/p>\n\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t <\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t <\/div>\t\t\t \r\n\t\t\t

A Glimpse from 1834<\/h2>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t

An 1834 guide to County Durham described the current footpath to the falls, and mentions the creation of an inn which is still present today as High Force Hotel:<\/p>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t

\u201cAn inn has recently been erected […]. A Footpath descends from this place, and winds round the bottom of the precipices on the north side of the river [\u2026]. A Timeless Inspiration for Artists and Writers<\/h3>\n

Throughout the centuries, artists and writers alike have attempted to capture the majesty of High Force. The first known painting of the falls was created in 1746 by George Lambert, and in 1816 the renowned artist J.M.W. Turner painted a watercolour of High Force when he toured the area[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”5\/12″ offset=”vc_col-lg-offset-1″][vc_single_image image=”3560″ img_size=”large” css=”.vc_custom_1742988341364{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Life in the Tropics<\/h3>\n

About 330 million years ago \u2013 in the Carboniferous Period \u2013 the North Pennines lay under a shallow tropical sea. The remains of corals, shell-fish and crinoids accumulated on the seabed and eventually hardened into limestone. This is the layered grey rock in the lower half of the waterfall. If you look closely at the limestone by the viewpoint you may find fossil fragments. Sand and mud from vast deltas were periodically washed into the sea, hardening to become layers of sandstone and shale you can see along the path and half way up the waterfall.<\/p>\n

Molten Rock<\/h3>\n

High Force is a great place to see the famous Whin Sill. This is a layer of a hard, dark rock called dolerite, known locally as \u2018whinstone\u2019. The Whin Sill formed about 295 million years ago, when molten rock at over 1000\u00b0C rose up from within the Earth and spread out between layers of limestone, sandstone and shale. The molten rock cooled and solidified underground to form a flat sheet of rock, known as a \u2018sill\u2019. After million of years of erosion the Whin Sill is now exposed at the Earth\u2019s surface, forming dramatic landscape features such as High Force and nearby Holwick Scars.<\/p>\n

Sculpted by Water<\/h3>\n

The gorge at High Force has been shaped by water \u2013 from the torrential meltwaters released at the end of the last ice age, to today\u2019s River Tees. The hard rock of the Whin Sill forms a resistant lip over which the River Tees plunges. Over thousands of years the water erodes away the softer sandstone and limestone lower in the cliff, undercutting the Whin Sill. Blocks of it break off and the process starts again. In this way the waterfall is gradually retreating upstream. High Force has now reached this point on its slow journey up Teesdale \u2013 and it is still on the move![\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1551447448638{padding-top: 0px !important;padding-right: 25px !important;padding-bottom: 30px !important;padding-left: 25px !important;background-color: #ffffff !important;}”][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n
