Job details

The Raby Estate is currently embarking upon the largest single project for generations. Known as The Rising, the project involves the restoration and repurposing of heritage buildings at Raby Castle, a new visitor car park, play area, events space, café and visitors centre as well as a redesign of the historic walled garden.

We are seeking to recruit an experienced Assistant Gardener. This is a newly vacant position during an exciting time of change and expansion within Raby Estate gardens. The position will involve working closely with the Head Gardener to achieve Lord and Lady Barnard’s ambitions for the gardens.

What you will be doing

The five acre walled garden is being reimagined by designer Luciano Giubbilei. All areas outside the walled garden, accessible to the public, are being designed by Alistair W Baldwin Associates, encompassing the car park, café gardens, setting to the new visitor centre, reimagined flower gardens and newly designed gathering spaces next to some key historical buildings.

The successful candidate, with support from the Head Gardener and the Assistant Head Gardener, will work within the gardening and landscaping team alongside volunteers and will be responsible for all aspects of horticulture and presentation within the walled garden and wider landscaped areas, as well as garden facilities and irrigation. Including the five-acre walled garden, the entire site extends to approximately 24 acres.

What we need to see

We are looking for someone who has previous experience of maintaining gardens that are open to the public in a historic setting. Confidence in public speaking as the gardens attract many visitors during the year who may stop and ask questions about the surroundings.

You need to have a flexible approach to duties, work well within a team and independently be organised and an effective communicator. We are looking for someone who can show honesty, integrity, enthusiasm and capacity for hard work and attention to detail with a cheerful approach and ‘can do’ problem solving attitude.

You will need good horticultural experience and a level 2 or above in an associated subject. Good knowledge of Health and Safety is a must.

PA1 and PA6 Spraying and basic chainsaw certificates would be an advantage.
