Uncovering the Stories of Raby Castle’s Workforce Through the Ages

From the medieval times of the Nevilles to the present day, the workforce of Raby has operated behind the scenes to keep the castle running. The 1841 census shows the most popular occupation at the time as ‘domestic servant.’

Join us as we journey through the working experiences of those employed in Raby Castle and on the wider estate. From medieval cooks creating magnificent banquets, to scullerymaids washing dishes during the interwar period, Raby’s workforce has been transformed throughout the years in response to changes in society and fortunes of the family.

Using wage records, first-hand accounts and photographs, we’ll uncover the stories of those who have experienced Raby in a different way.
