Film and TV Locations
Raby Estate offers incredible filming locations with a Castle, Deer Park, Waterfall, Rural Landscapes, Quarries, Rivers, Hotels, Moorlands and so much more.
The Raby Estate is no stranger to screen stardom, with the Estate and Castle having featured in many high-profile television and movie productions, including Emmerdale, Golden Globe winning and Oscar nominated blockbuster 1917, Sky Atlantic’s Britannia, the 1998 Oscar winning movie Elizabeth with Cate Blanchett and ITV’s Victoria.
The Estate incorporates Raby Castle, High Force Hotel and Waterfall and thousands of acres of County Durham moorland, woodland, arable and grazing land.
Our experience as a film and TV location means we are able to deal direct with production companies and location managers to provide a Unit Base and Shoot Location.
Natural Landscapes
The Estate’s dramatic landscape offers huge possibilities to filmmakers looking for dramatic locations for filming. Stretching across Upper Teesdale, it incorporates part of the spectacular North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a National Geopark. The River Tees cascades over High Force Waterfall, one of the highest and most magnificent falls in the UK, tumbling towards Low Force, which was the location for the dramatic escape scenes in 1917.
Historic Castle Filming Locations
Raby Castle is the perfect filming location for history, drama and romance. It is one of the most complete English Castles with parts of the building dating back to Medieval times. Here, in the Baron’s Hall, 700 knights gathered to plot The Rising of the North in 1569. The Castle and interiors have provided inspiration to location managers for a range of filming sequences. The imposing Grand Entrance Hall, for example, featured in the television series Victoria.

Country Hotel Filming Locations
The High Force Hotel as well as being a fantastic filming location, can provide boutique accommodation during filming as well as being a location setting in its own right. We were pleased to welcome actor George MacKay, who stayed with us at High Force during the filming of 1917. The Hotel’s cosy and traditional fireside snug, bar area and function room make an excellent setting for bar, restaurant and event scenes.
