A Taste of History

Step inside Raby’s historic medieval kitchen and explore the rich, surprising and sometimes delicious story of how plants shaped life at the Castle – not only on the plate, but also in healing and household medicine.

Guided by our knowledgeable team, you’ll discover handwritten recipes and receipt books that reveal what was cooked, eaten and prescribed – from everyday meals to grand feasts, and from soothing herbal infusions to curious medicinal preparations. Learn how new ingredients, spices and healing plants travelled to the estate, how culinary and medicinal knowledge was shared and adapted, and how inspiration flowed through travel, trade and changing tastes across Britain and beyond. Closer to home, explore how produce from the gardens and Home Farm supplied both the kitchen and the stillroom, influencing menus as well as remedies for common ailments. This engaging show-and-tell offers a fascinating insight into the tastes, skills and plant knowledge that fed, treated and sustained Raby for generations.

This ticket also gives you entry to the Castle, Deer Park & Gardens tickets for the remainder of the day.
