Discover how plants have shaped the creativity, tastes and traditions of Raby across the centuries in this brand-new show-and-tell tour, exploring how the natural world has influenced the Castle’s residents, right up to the present day. From exquisite floral motifs woven into decorative arts and interiors, to textiles, watercolours and objects inspired by gardens, this tour reveals the many ways plant life has connected Raby’s people with the landscape around them. You’ll encounter historic documents, botanical-themed objects from the collection, and interiors where leaves, vines and blossoms are featured in design work.
Our Castle in Bloom installations highlight how today’s floral artists also draw from Raby’s horticultural heritage – its gardens, plantings and stories – crafting breathtaking contemporary displays that reimagine the Castle’s relationship with nature. Blending historic treasures with modern artistic responses, this tour celebrates the enduring power of plants to inspire Raby.
Please note that accessibility inside the Castle is limited due to the historic nature of the building. This tour includes areas of the Castle that are not usually open to the public. The route includes uneven floor surfaces, tight staircases and areas where there is no access to seating. Flat shoes and warm clothing are strongly recommended. Numbers are limited on these special tours as we glimpse into smaller, more intimate rooms and share some of the lesser-known stories of Raby Castle and the people who have lived and worked here. Please inform the Castle team in advance by calling 01833 650202 or emailing admin@raby.co.uk
