A Taste of History
Step inside Raby’s historic medieval kitchen with Raby Castle’s Archivist and explore the rich, surprising and sometimes delicious history of recipes at Raby. For this summer’s Castle in Bloom celebrations, this special event will explore how plants have always shaped life at the Castle – not only on the plate, but also in healing and household medicine.
By delving into these rarely-seen recipe books, you will uncover what was cooked, eaten and prescribed: from everyday meals to grand feasts, and from soothing herbal infusions to curious medicinal preparations.
Recipes show new ingredients, spices and healing plants which travelled to the estate, culinary and medicinal knowledge being shared and adapted, and how inspiration flowed through travel, trade and changing tastes across Britain and beyond. Closer to home, recipes show how produce from the gardens and Home Farm supplied both the kitchen and the stillroom, influencing menus as well as remedies for common ailments.
Join this engaging show-and-tell for a fascinating insight into the recipes that fed, treated and sustained Raby for generations, and discover some of the historic Raby recipes you could try at home!
