From the turnpikes and waggon ways of the late 1700s to the experience of first-class passengers during the golden age of steam a century later, the opportunity to travel has always been part of the Raby story.

This small exhibition, coinciding with the S&DR200 Festival, journeys through time, tunnelling into Raby’s archives and collections to discover stories of railway development. From the surveyors who mapped the local terrain to the Dukes and Duchesses who enjoyed glamourous tours to Europe, the story reflects a wider national picture, as uncertainties about the impact of new technology developed into railway mania.

Exhibition Talks: Half-hour talk at 13:00 every Wednesday in Raby Castle Entrance Hall exploring the background to the exhibition and the research carried out by our curation and archives team.  Free entry with a Raby Castle, Park and Gardens ticket.
