Raby

Film and TV Locations

The Raby Estate offers an extraordinary canvas for filming opportunities with acres of agricultural land, vast woodland, heritage landscapes and unique buildings. From farms to chapels, castles to quarries, waterfalls to caves, Raby has it all. The Estate combines the grandeur and tranquillity of Raby Castle and its surrounding parkland with the wild, raw beauty of the Upper Teesdale moorland, making it ideal for productions of all genres.

Raby Castle itself offers dramatic architecture, period interiors and natural beauty. A fully intact castle, surrounded by expansive deer park and walled gardens, Raby Castle offers the perfect location for history, drama and romance. From towers, turrets, a courtyard, to untouched rooms packed with character. Add to this purpose-designed spaces for green rooms, production space and unit bases – a historic setting with creative industries in mind, led by an experienced team.

Our experience as a filming location means we can deal directly with production companies and location managers to provide seamless service, making connections to local suppliers in the most incredible yet largely undiscovered region.

Natural Landscapes

The Estate’s dramatic landscape offers huge possibilities to filmmakers looking for dramatic locations for filming. Stretching across Upper Teesdale, it incorporates part of the spectacular North Pennines National Landscape, a National Geopark.  The River Tees cascades over High Force Waterfall, one of the highest and most magnificent falls in the UK, tumbling towards Low Force, which was the location for the dramatic escape scenes in 1917.

Historic Castle Filming Locations

Raby Castle is the perfect filming location for history, drama and romance. It is one of the most complete English Castles with parts of the building dating back to Medieval times. Here, in the Baron’s Hall, 700 knights gathered to plot The Rising of the North in 1569.  The Castle and interiors have provided inspiration to location managers for a range of filming sequences. The imposing Grand Entrance Hall, for example, featured in the television series Victoria.

Country Hotel Filming Locations

The High Force Hotel as well as being a fantastic filming location, can provide boutique accommodation during filming as well as being a location setting in its own right. We were pleased to welcome actor George MacKay, who stayed with us at High Force during the filming of 1917. The Hotel’s cosy and traditional fireside snug, bar area and function room make an excellent setting for bar, restaurant and event scenes.

Testimonials

Raby is so much more than just a castle. They have a VAST estate with countless options for filmmakers from waterfalls, forests, bridges, moorland and literally 100’s of different buildings, cottages, farms, ruins, barns and more. They have come a long way since I first filmed at the castle 25 years ago! Their film liaison team are really keen to help and their hotel is one of my favourite places to stay! “We were looking for a very specific brief with precise geography and orientation. Sophie and here amazing team not only helped us find it amongst Raby’s vast array of locations, but also made the whole process simple and efficient. And I don’t think there’s a better base than The High Force Hotel!”
