Celebrating the work of Sir Joshua Reynolds

This July, Raby Castle invites art lovers to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of one of England’s best loved portrait painters; Sir Joshua Reynolds. Born in Devon in 1723, Reynolds is best known for his portraits, capturing the likeness of hundreds of 18th century sitters, whether in rags or riches.

Join our Castle Curator for a closer look at the works by Reynolds in the collections at Raby Castle. From a portrait of Catherine Powlett, who later married the 3rd Earl of Darlington who sat for the artist in 1778, to Raby Vane, son of the 1st Earl of Darlington, painted by Reynolds in 1766.

This special lunchtime talk invites visitors to get closer to these remarkable artworks and includes the first chance to view a rare drawing by Reynolds, purchased recently for the Raby Castle collection that has never been on public display before.

“Many thanks for a most interesting talk today. It opened a new insight for me, not an art buff, but your descriptive explanations were very well received. You asked for comments as to future similar occasions and I would say 100% yes.  Well worth attending. “
